Alyson’s Darwin Adventure part 6

July 25 2010

Alyson Evans' Forum Theatre Workshop @ Darwin Community Arts

“This week I spent five fantastic days on a 4WD safari which took me to the most beautiful National parks in the Top End. At Litchfield I swam in lovely waterfalls and went on a Billabong cruise where there were lots of crocs lurking! At Katherine Gorge I went canoeing for three hours where we went deep in the gorge, and I got stuck on a rock that was hiding under the water! Then to possibly my favourite place in the world, Kakadu National Park. The park is a world heritage listed sight, and is the size of Wales. It’s full of stunning scenery, wildlife and rock art dating back 5000 years. We spent three days there, where we went down bumpy dirt roads and rock climbed to get to quiet waterfalls and lookouts, and in the nights we slept in swags, which is a canvas sleeping bag that you get in and sleep under the stars around a camp fire. Fantastic.

Back in Darwin I facilitated a two day workshop on Friday and Saturday where I trained people from organisations around Darwin in Forum Theatre. We had a great turn out of 18 people who were all keen to take part and learn. Over the two days I showed them games for bonding and team building, which normally encouraged a lot of laughter! And then explored Forum Theatre, with the group creating their own scenes, and even having a go at Jokering themselves. When asked how these workshops will benefit them, some said:

‘Collected many new ways to bond a group with numerous interesting games.’

‘I have a further understanding of forum theatre. Personally it was beneficial for self confidence. I will definitely use this work’

‘Very energising!!! I feel part of a community movement in its early stages!’”
