Teen Dating Abuse Drama

July 9 2010

Jez Thomas leads the Teen Dating Abuse Drama group

Thanks to funding from the Community Cohesion Fund (Safer Bridgend) we are devising and producing a film about Teen Dating Abuse.  The project is in partnership with Bridgend Women’s Aid, who will be using the film in their outreach work with young people.

Teen Dating Abuse is becoming more and more recognised as an important issue for young people to be talking about and in a recent survey backed by the NSPCC it was found that out of 2,000 teenagers aged 13-19, with more than four in 10 (43%) believing it was acceptable for a boyfriend to get aggressive in certain circumstances – for example if a girl cheated on him, flirted with somebody else, screamed at him or “dressed outrageously”.

Drama facilitators Ali Moloney and Jez Thomas are currently working with a group of young people from Bryntirion Comprehensive School to devise a fictional drama about an abusive situation arising between a young couple.  We are improvising different ideas for scenes ready to film in the last week of term.  When the film is produced it will be available with a teaching resource for teachers and youth workers across South Wales to help explore the issues and raise awareness.
