We have recently made four new films working with young people in South Wales as part of the First Light Movies Awards. Following our film festival in November 2007 and the excellent feedback we received from all the films we have been reflecting on what was learnt and achieved in the creative process with these very different groups.
In The Sound of the Drum we worked with young Asylum Seekers living in Cardiff using film and drama to explore stories of identity, belonging, isolation, friendships and hopes and fears for their future. Film Development Worker Katja Stiller reflects on the project:
“The young people who worked on the project learnt a lot of new skills and developed friendships. The project was an emotional journey for the participants – at first they did not want to make a film about anything to do with seeking Asylum. A few months into the project they realised how much their lives are affected by the insecurity of their future and they changed the script. The final end product is honest and hard hitting. One film festival visitor said after seeing the film: “You have to make sure that this film gets shown, people have to see this film.”
