Our last funk workshops were so successful that Community Dance Wales and Valley and Vale Community Arts decided to work in partnership again to get the ‘one and only’ Yami (aka ‘Rowdy’) back to Cardiff and Bridgend to deliver Popping and Locking workshops. We counted down the days to her visit, and boy was every second worth counting!
Yami delivered a Popping workshop for adults at Rubicon Dance Studios in Cardiff, and we had a total of seventeen people taking part. The funk-styler enriched everyone’s knowledge of Popping, feeding us with detailed history and foundations of the Funk Style; the dancers were hanging onto every word and movement that Yami delivered, creating an encouraging and buzzing atmosphere!
The majority of participants in the workshop had never tried Popping before and informed us afterwards that this was one of the most inspiring workshops they had ever experienced. As a result they have already asked for more workshops with Yami and are hungry for more!
Yami also facilitated a Popping and Locking workshop in Ogmore School in Bridgend, with a total of thirty five kids and adults taking part. Yami got everyone funking to old school tunes, performing Locking partner work and Popping group pieces. This was a great opportunity for people to not only learn how to get down and get funky but to dance TOGETHER – one of the most important components of the funk styles!
Funk styles derived from social dances and therefore dancing as a group and in partners is the key element of the dance. Ending the workshop with a soul train put the cherry on the icing….everyone let their hair down and quite simply grooved their way down the room!
We can’t wait for the next time to get the funk on…..
