by Alyson Evans, Drama Development Worker
It was in 2002, during my BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts, when I had first contact with Valley and Vale. I was in my second year when Deri and Del, the then drama workers came and introduced Community Arts and Forum Theatre to my class. I was so struck by this style of work, and was interested right from the start. I couldn’t believe how much an impact theatre could have in the community and what a great way of development it offered.
With my keen interest, Valley and Vale offered me the opportunity to become a volunteer and I jumped at the chance. I absolutely loved it, and learnt so much about facilitation and getting the best out of people, plus I had loads of fun! I realised this was a path in theatre I wanted to take and, obviously I did, and felt very proud when I became a member of staff once leaving University.
But the time has come that I leave Valley and Vale. I leave some fantastic friends, amazing groups and clubs I’ve worked with, plus brilliant young people who I have watched grow over the years. But my love of travel has taken over so on to my next adventure, first stop Australia where I hope to continue my work and gain even more knowledge and experience.
Even though I feel so excited not really knowing what the future holds or where it will take me, I cannot help but feel sad to be leaving, and so grateful for the support and encouragement Valley and Vale has always given me. I’m going to miss you all!
