We have recently started a new dance project, working with Bettws Primary School, near Bridgend. The aim of this project is find new avenues of working with children who have a hearing impairment through the means of dance.
At the beginning of each class our Dance Development Worker Issie Lloyd spends fifteen minutes learning British Sign Language with the children. This has worked well as an introduction to each dance session and allowed her to communicate with the children on a personal level.
After teaching the group with HI, Issie then teaches an integrated group of children (with and without HI) and compares how the two groups respond to the same teaching techniques. This has been a brilliant learning curve for Issie and has enabled her to adapt her teaching methods to suit individual needs.
We will be continuing this project for at least another six weeks and hopefully, by the end, Issie will have a basic understanding of British Sign Language and a variety of new teaching methods specific to the target group.
