Over the past month our Dance Worker Sophie Grosvenor has been facilitating Breakdance (Bboying) workshops in Ogmore Vale and Plasnewydd Primary Schools in the Bridgend area.
During this time students have been taught the history and foundations of Breaking, including Top Rock, Get Downs, Footwork and Freezes.
Although the dance style is new to most students involved, it is fair to say that they have embraced it with everything they have, and in some cases gone further than that; ‘I just can’t get break dance out of my head’, exclaimed one child at Ogmore. It seems that instead of football and skipping, the playground is now home to groups of children practising their Shuffles and Zulu spins, which they now execute with surprising skill.
We are planning an end of year show at Plasnewydd School. Let’s hope that Breakin’ Fever keeps up its momentum in both schools, and, who knows … the next generation of Bboys and Bgirls may be closer than we think.
