We are starting a new Visual Arts project at HMP Parc in Bridgend this month. We will be creating a large-scale mural for one of their exercise yards to brighten the walls up. Visual Arts Worker Tim Smith will be working with the young prisoners with support from Anne Marie in the Art Department and exploring the theme of Diversity which is a key priority in the prison, using creativity to promote awareness in an accessible and enjoyable way. We will also be running a music project, making a rap on the same theme with the young men, and with the aim of launching both together in the summer at HMP Parc.
We have a good relationship created by working on many projects over the years at this prison and enjoy bringing positive and often challenging creative experiences into this environment. Prison staff comment that the prisoners look forward to our workshops and that there is a feeling of increased positivity, self-esteem and the ability of prisoners to focus on the creative process rather than the often negative emotions that imprisonment can bring.
