During June and July, workshops have taken place at Ysgol Plasmawr and Stanwell Comprehensive School in partnership with Barnardo’s Cymru Seraf Service. The workshops were aimed at educating young people and raising awareness of Child Sexual Exploitation. During the workshops, actress Megan John performed the monologue ‘I was only 13’ to Year 10 pupils. The monologue was based on the harrowing true story of a young girl from South Wales who was sexually exploited, it was written by Liz Raynor and directed by Alys Byrne.
Lisa Ambrose from Barnardo’s Cymru Seraf Service talked to the young people about the stages of the grooming process and the reality and dangers of sexual exploitation. Sian Hughes ended the sessions with creative writing exercises focusing on positive relationships. Combining awareness raising and the opportunity for creative expression helps to engage the young people. The challenge with sessions like this is to communicate how sexual exploitation can affect a wide range of young people, discussions and different art forms help break stereo types of who is at risk. As part of the sessions the young people also find out where to get help. We are planning to run more sessions across different comprehensives schools after the summer break.
This project was made possible by funding from Children in Need.
