Issie’s Refugee Week Dance Flashmob Blog

Shake That Soul

by Issie Lloyd, Dance Development Worker

In celebration of Refugee Week, Valley and Vale and the Welsh Refugee Council decided to work in partnership and catch the publics attention… with a flashmob! I rounded up all the men who I teach at OASIS in Cardiff and encouraged many friends and co-workers to join in the fun, oh and what a blast we had! The men from OASIS shared their traditional cultural dances throughout the flashmob, so that everyone could see what wonderful energy and talent these guys bring to our community. We danced funk social dances, Eritrean dancing and Kurdish dancing. After a lot of leaping, jumping around in a circle, holding hands, shrugging shoulders and dancing in partners, we had most certainly been successful with catching the general public’s focus. Onlookers couldn’t resist and joined in the fun. This really was a special day for all!

This is a subject i feel so passionately about, refugees are wonderful people who have many views, talents and skills to bring to the Welsh community. They deserve to be here as much as any other person and we clearly represented that throughout the flashmob. Thank you to all who were involved!
