This was a new group for 2010. We were contacted by Sue Sprag from the project who knew about our work and wanted to try it with her group:
“ The group at Y Bont can sometimes feel cut off from the local community and we could really do with some dance sessions with you.’
This new Dance Disabilty group with Ty Pen y Bont has been taking place at Nolton Church Hall in Bridgend. Some of the participants have been involved in dance work with us before, as part of the Split Level Dance Group, and others were new to it and hadn’t tried dance before.
Our primary aim was to facilitate a dance/movement session for the group within the community in Bridgend, rather than at their own Centre. The project has been benefitting the participants in encouraging healthy lifestyles, activity and creativity, and also helping to integrate Day Service users into the community and build new links in and around the Bridgend Borough.
Our weekly sessions build a safe environment and encourage people to get to know each other. This is important at the start of a new workshop, so that group members feel confident to explore movement and try our new things in a supportive space.
Using music as our inspiration there has been some magical moments and a glimpse of some beautiful creative phrases in both solos and duets. We are all very happy and excited about this workshop and hope that we will develop this project further into the future.
