YOSROC at The Court House

Neil White

In early 2010 Bridgend YOS ( Youth Offending Service ) in consultation with young people, who were going through the youth justice system, wanted somehow to engage in creative music sessions. The young people all aged between fifteen and nineteen had no previous experience with any musical instruments and a proposal was made to Valley and Vale to look at the possibility of weekly work shops which would be funded through a grant from the BCBC YOS resettlement panel.

The project started up in August 2010, held at Valley and Vale headquarters in Betws and to date up to fifteen  young people have engaged in the project, with one young person successfully going on to volunteer within the programme whilst also performing at numerous high profile events, most recently The Children’s Directorate – Showcase of Youth Talent 2011 at The Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl.

Recently, through BAVO (Bridgend Association of Voluntary Services ) an opportunity appeared for the sessions to move from Betws to The Court House in Maesteg , this has helped in broadening the project’s outreach from solely targeting young people within the YOS to making it open and accessible  to young people in the Maesteg area as well. We have therefore been working out of The Court House for the past four weeks and are attracting between ten and thirteen young people every session and hope fully by the new year we will have a group of young musicians working towards performances in the near future.
